Aurora, NE - A last minute rescue. Dogs taken out of a puppy mill and now to safety.
Fearful eyes, shaking just at the sight of a person. Two dozen pugs rescued from a puppy mill in western Nebraska. "I'm amazed they stayed alive," said Hearts United for Animals Carol Wheeler.
Now the animals get a chance for a better life. "We saw them being picked up by the scruff of the neck and I think they have very little attention and none of it friendly," said Wheeler.
24 pugs all here in these cages rescued by Hearts United for Animals. Many of them in a medical emergency. "One has lost an eye, there may be some eye infection and one has a tail that maggots ate on it," said Wheeler.
Trying desperately to get away, each pug needs human interaction, a bit of time to be loved. It's something they've been forced to live without their entire lives. "These dogs pitiful, and it's hard to stand," said Wheeler.
Looking at the little faces and curly tails, these dogs are the lucky ones. Some others didn't make it. "The last two pregnant females, one died giving birth and one ate her puppies and usually that's a matter of severe stress," said Wheeler.
Hearts United is sending some of the pugs to Minnesota and Canada to try to get them adopted. Five pugs are getting placed with Pug Partners of Nebraska rescue group here in Omaha. The organization is trying to find each dog a good foster home.
